Not only do I want to continue reading about Alvin Ho and his adventures...I want a son just like him! Perfectly precocious!

I want to like Alvin Ho, I really do... But I've come across a few lines just make the author seem a tiny bit racist (I think each instance was food related, but I didn't note them other than thinkingl "Oh, that's not exactly PC, is it?). And Alvin as a whole just isn't a really believable character or situation. He's also very repetitive (we get it, Alvin...you like it when your Dad calls you "son"...you only say it like six times every book). The only thing I don't have any complaints about are the illustrations by LeUyen Pham. I love her depictions of Flea and Dad in particular. Dad just seems like he was inspired by vintage Superman line-art and I love it. Otherwise: not my cup of tea, really.

Probably would have liked this one as much as the first if I had read it myself. Instead I did the audiobook which is read by a kid. Sounds like a neat idea... isn't. It's a disaster. Voices of characters aren't consistent, sentences are badly phrased, words are mispronounced. Ahhh, it is painful.

I might have liked this one better than the first one. I felt like this one had a more unified, linear plot line. I also devoured in one sitting, which might have helped. I'm still a fan! And I'm excited to start recommending it when it comes out.

Isabelle allowed me to read this book to her, and she liked it so much she wanted to go back and read Alvin Ho: Allergic to Girls, School, and Other Scary Things. As a sequel, it felt like "more of the same", but it's a formula that works for me, so that's okay. (Although, the part when Alvin befriends a boy who is wearing the same night-vision goggles as he's wearing is a bit TOO reminiscent of Ruby Lu meeting her cousin for the first time and finding that they share the same love for reflecting tape.) It won't stop me from reading Alvin Ho: Allergic to Birthday Parties, Science Projects, and Other Man-made Catastrophes once I can find it at the library. I like Alvin Ho more than Ruby Lu, maybe because Alvin Ho elicits some sense of sympathy, and also, I can relate to at least some of his anxieties.

Oh, Alvin, how I adore you. I just want to wrap him up and stick him in my pocket. :-)

Alvin Ho is back and this time he's facing something even scarier than school: camping. Do you know what could happen to you when you're camping? You could be attacked by bears! You could get lost in the woods! There could be a tornado or an earthquake or a flood! So Alvin had better be prepared...
This is a sweet, funny story that's very well-written. Alvin Ho is a likeably imperfect character and the supporting characters in the story (namely Alvin's sister and dad in this book) are add to the story. The illustrations also add to the warm humor of the story. Highly recommended.

I love Alvin Ho. He is such a lovable character, and even though he is afraid of everything, he still manages to be brave. He likes his family, siblings included, which I find a rare in children's lit. I like that these books are fun and have a diverse cast of characters.
