If you're going to write a work that is this lengthy, there needs to be a good reason for the length. Although I respect his facility with simple storytelling, his descriptions of the minutae of daily living are exhausting. Also, i'm no prude, but some of the deviant sexuality in the book is reprehensibly justified. The fantastical elements were interesting, but a lot is left unexplained. Murakmi's editor should have eliminated at least 100 pages of the book! Repetition abounds.

This was a long slog. There were times when it was engaging and exciting but also times where it felt exceptionally self indulgent. The amount of times the same thing was repeated in as frustrating. There were too many strands of ideas that were introduced but never really explained. I'm not sure it was worth the effort of reading.

It was too crass for my tastes.
