Fever of the Bone

The ending left me sort of flat.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read Val McDermid. I was afraid it had been too long and I’d forgotten what Carol and Tony were like. I do forget some of the nuances of their relationship but it was nice being back with them. In this one, teens are going missing and turning up dead. They’re meeting the mysterious person on a social networking site but not much else is known. It’s a lengthy explanation but the short of it this: the man that started a high tech data protection agency had a vasectomy a long time ago, after selling his sperm so he could afford the procedure. His current gf wanted a baby. He never told her and so by the time they went through years of trying to have a baby, by the time they went the artificial insemination route, she was too old. She got angry and started to track all of the kids that were from his donor sperm and kill them, mutilating their reproductive organs before killing them. In the side story, Tony’s father who he never knew, had left his home to Tony. Tony goes to see it, as one of the murders took place in that town. He eventually learns that his mom had never told Tony’s father she was pregnant and also tried to kill his dad for his money. When the novel ends, Tony has decided to leave the force and go move into the house and asks Carol to move with him and leaves just how he means that up to her.

I'm exhausted.

Wow… the best Tony Hill/Carol Jordan novel so far! Val McDermid nailed it with this one! A setisl killer with no obvious “type”, and a brutal killing signature. It takes the entire team, with several new characters, to figure it out. Also,Carol helps Tony learn about who he is and where he comes from…

Another great Tony Hill/Carol Jordan thriller. Just when you thought their relationship couldn’t get any more complicated, Jacko Vance (who they put behind bars) escapes from prison and throws a seemingly insurmountable obstacle in their way. This book was really hard to put down!
