Every word she writes is like the coolest glass of water you’ve ever sipped. She’s a wizard.

Some 4 star excerpts and some 2 star ones; giving a blended rating of 3 stars overall.
Sections 1 & 3 were lovely. Section 1 discussed Mary Oliver’s childhood, growing up playing in the woods with Walt Whitman’s writing, and finding poetry in nature. Section 3 covered thoughts on Emerson, Poe, Whitman, and Wordsworth. There’s many beautiful poems in each, both of these sections are heavily underlined in my copy of the book.
Section 2–on fishing, and ponds, and turtles—while nature related, seemed misplaced to me. I found these to be much more descriptive essay, less poetry than the other writing.

3.75/5. I loved some parts of it and some were not for me. I am very interested in her poetry now.

Poetry has a way of always prompting me to be thoughtful, I especially enjoyed Oliver’s connection to nature and unapologetic way of being so confident in who she is. “May I always be myself. And then some.”

Reading and diving into these essays made me feel like I was getting my English degree again in the best way.
These essays were amazing. I loved especially Bird, the exploration of Poe, and Owls. Can’t wait to read more and more and more of Mary Oliver.
