For centuries people have searched the foreshore at low tide on the Thames for a chance of making a living or, more recently, to find treasure. These mudlarks have a history tied up with that of the city. Lara Maiklem is a long-standing member of the community and she takes the reader on a geographical journey down the thames and across the centuries as she indulges in her surprisingly interesting hobby.
The passionate hobbit is a passionate person indeed and Maiklem embodies this amateur enthusiasm. Her book is a love story to the river and the city and a gallop through thousands of years of history. Encompassing history, geography, geology, sociology and even a bit of danger, the sense of humour is to the fore always and this is a delightful read.

Stories of “tiny pieces of faraway places.” Part poetry, part treasure hunt.

Fascinating pastime - searching Thames banks for treasure and linking findings to British history. Urban equivalent of beachcombing.

Good. The author did a nice job weaving together history, geography, and interesting anecdotes along with stories of her own finds and experiences on the shore of the Thames.

I found this really enjoyable. I love the river and dream of trying mudlarking (there are nonew licences being issued, and you need one to do it, but in London, for £25 there are guided tours with a licenced mudlark, where you can try it, although you don't get to take any treasure home), so I was pleased to find this book at the local library.

It was delightful toread: Lara Maiklem goes along the river in sections, one per chapter, starting around Hammersmith, and it was enjoyable to read about places I walk past every week without noticing them. There is a lot about several finds and the history she traces - objects discarded from a pub, from print shops, lost items, and of course the clay pipes that feature on many of the mudlarking videos I have watched online. It was fascinating and I liked the writing as well - would definitely recommend.
