I stopped reading this book at 48% because I found the FMC to be insufferable. I feel it’s a shame I wasted the $12 I spent on this book.

I binge-read this one. It was ubputdownable for me. I loved the story telling, the characters voices shown through so beautifully. I really liked the fantasy twist on the civil war and making slave owners the true monsters they were by portraying them as vampires. I thought the main characters balanced each other beautifully and challenged each other to be better. This is a story I will be thinking about for a long time.

"Keep asking...keep fighting. Your stubbornness to accept your fate is why you're still alive."

I can't really find the right words to describe this book, other than powerful.

"Evil don't have to be outright to still be evil."

It it's an emotional historical fantasy story, set during the Civil War. The story explores the horrors of slavery, with some of the characters being demigods and others being vampires.

Heartbreaking, inspiring, romantic are three words I'd use to describe this novel and I definitely recommend it!

I listened to this book on Audible and loved the narrators for both Alexei and Jerusalem!

Of the three books by this author,  "The Dangerous Ones" is better than book two.

The Civil War, but with vampires

For me, this book was a solid 3.5.
I liked it, but I didn't love it.

The premise was really good, I thought it would be interesting to see a historical event with magical elements, and that was my favourite part of the story.
But chunks of the book fell flat for me, and some parts left me with questions.
And while I can understand that Jerusalem struggled with her feelings for Alexei , him being a vampire and all… she was mostly awful to him.
It made me not like her, nor did I want them to end up together.

I really tried to like this but taking a white vampire man through the Underground Railroad just doesn’t sit right in my spirit. I couldn’t keep pushing 😖

Actual rating 2.5 stars. I really wanted to love this one. If anyone was set up to love this book it was me, a historian who worked in a civil war museum and is obsessed with vampires. I thought the lore and the character backstories were well done. The writing style didn’t really bother me. Unfortunately I agree with most of the other reviews in terms of the relationship. I almost wish Lex and Jer wouldn’t have known each other for a whole year already because they’re established friends, they have an established bond but after a whole year she’s still name calling him and treating him like she would an enemy. Which, trauma fair, but then don’t have them be so established. It came off as if the only person in the world allowed to have trauma according to Jerusalem was Jerusalem. It was exhausting and that’s saying something that it was the most difficult part when I was braced to go in dealing with themes of slavery, violence against women and hate crimes.
