The first book in the Jedi Academy trilogy.
The good: the gang is all back together (compared to my last read which was isolated to Han, Leia, Threepio & Chewie), this picks up following Timothy Zahn’s amazing Thrawn trilogy, and Luke decides to search the galaxy for new potential Jedi he will train. A decent amount of New Republic politics, my favorite part of Star Wars, and I thought Leia’s characterization was solid with her being a “new mom” while also being an extremely busy and important diplomat.
The “meh”: Lando’s role is… interesting. There are some weird side stories in the book. The point of view switches a lot, sometimes inconveniently just as you start enjoying whatever part you were on. And I, personally, was annoyed at the lack of urgency for most of the book with what was going on with Han.
Overall, a solid 3/5 stars, definitely better than Tatooine Ghost & it made me want to continue the trilogy, which is what a first book should do.

It's an interesting concept, Luke going out and looking for new jedi for his academy but it was pretty weird. Instead of reading this book, I should have watched blob racing on the blobstacle course from my new ship, the suncrusher.

Decent enough that I'll finish all three, but the setup isn't exactly deep. I'm not a fan of the Sun Crusher concept as superweapons in general are far overused in the Star Wars universe and this one seems like a trump card. I'm also a very harsh critic when writers take on the original trilogy characters.
Oh look another deadly weapong that can destroy billions of lives
I love this trilogy, it's exciting, original, and epic. Some my say that Zahn's trilogy would be the best next three movies, but I disagree. This book is the perfect blend of mystery, action, comedy, and suspense. The beginning really starts off with a bang, and is quite exhilarating throughout. This book also adds some very interesting characters to the Star Wars family. With many books, there are lame characters that are never really brought up again. But this book, has characters that are so exciting, you end up wanting to find out more about them than the main characters. Very good. Not quite the best, but still good.

Painful, painful, painful. I was smack in the middle of a revival of my love of Star Wars thanks to [a:Timothy Zahn|12479|Timothy Zahn|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1215545810p2/12479.jpg]'s Thrawn Trilogy. I wanted more, had to have it, so I quickly snapped up these from my local bookseller. The smile on my face soon faded as I waded through the first book. None of the characters sounded like I imagined them...they said things they wouldn't say, did things that I KNEW they wouldn't do. The worst offenses were against characters that Zahn had created...KJA's interpretation of Senator Bel Iblis was horrid, and Mara Jade with Lando? Lame. The added subplots were, well lame. Lame is probably the best word to describe every original though KJA tried to shoehorn in.
