The Veiled Throne does not reach the highs that Ken Liu achieved with The Wall of Storms but I still remain enchanted with the world and characters in The Dandelion Dynasty series. There is typically a lull in the middle of any story and The Veiled Throne is a mostly enjoyable lull, it sets up a new generation of characters to take the reins in a series as the years phase out the older generation that carried the first two books. It does often feel like the main driving plot is treading water while fun side plots ensue. For a story that spans tens of years per book, getting stuck in a plot that involves an overextended cooking competition for the better part of 500 pages was a bit too in the muck. The historical fantasy is still really hitting the spot for me and I cannot wait to finish up the series.

I really liked the first two books in the series, but this one....I still can't fully elaborate yet why, but I just couldn't get into it. I've been slogging along until I realized that this felt more like assigned reading for a class instead of an enjoyable reading experience. Maybe the novelty of this silkpunk world has worn off, maybe it's a little too grim for me at parts, or maybe high fantasy ultimately just isn't for me personally. What I do know is that I've been slogging along, until I finally realized this felt more like assigned reading for a class instead of something that was supposed to be enjoyable. I am finally calling this a did-not-finish a third of the way in.
