This series keeps getting better. I really enjoyed the interlude of what was essentially a cooking competition show, and how it actually did connect to the larger political currents in the story. It was goofy and maybe not necessary but it was gripping! This book continues asking the questions that dominate this series, about the possibility of righteous violence, how to wield power, what it means to love your people, what does it even mean to have a people... I know this book and the next book are essentially one book, but the ending arc of this book really didn't feel like the end of a book, which felt somewhat unsatisfying. But still, Ken Liu continues to be an incredible worldbuilder and the people he writes keep me so invested.

Amazing...simply amazing.

The characters, the plot, the prose.....the cooking (if ya know, ya know).

Ken Liu has created a masterpiece--3 epic volumes, with one last volume to go.

I have no idea how this is going to end, only that it is going to be epic.

Do yourself a favor and read this series--you will not regret it.

The first 2 books in this series are some of the best fantasy I have read in decades, and it is with great sadness that I have to rate this book in comparison to them. Wow, what a step down from the previous books.

I think the author truly loves the world and the characters, to the point where he became over indulgent and started adding a bunch of new characters , plot lines, and made the main story seem like a side quest. This book takes forever to start getting interesting, and the established characters act insanely stubborn and self destructive.
The book is also way too long and could have been 1/3 shorter. The last 300 or so pages could have been cut entirely.

I’m looking forward to the fourth book and hoping for a strong resolution to the series.
