If you like comics at all, find anything by Jeremy Love and enjoy. He's a name you'll want to remember.

Beautiful, simple story. Wish I had checked out the next volume since it ended on a cliffhanger...

Hauntingly beautiful images depict a magical story set in Alabama amidst racial turmoil. An excellent book that left me ready to devour vol. 2.

Dark and creepy comic series. Rides an intriguing line between historical fiction and dark fairy tale. The story is appropriately macabre and heart-rending to the Jim Crow setting, and the color palette of the art is gorgeous. I do wish that the characters' eyes weren't so horrifying blank and round in most of the panels. Eek!

reread. i remembered this being brilliant and truthful about the race politics of the reconstruction era american south and doing really cool work with american folklore to create a set of monsters that match and reflect the monstrous racism driving most of the plot points
all of those remains true. i did, however, forget how brutal it gets. i feel like maybe i should've warned the coworker i recommended this series to but oh well. they watch game of thrones, i'm sure they've got more than enough tolerance for violence

Historical fiction + magical realism makes makes for a disturbing story about a little Black girl in Mississippi during the 1930s trying to prevent her father from being lynched.
