Shirley Jackson does creepy, lonely, dusty-seeming villages full of strange occurrences really well.

I read this for an English class in high school. I remember I thought it was the most confusing thing, I was frustrated by the story because I didn’t know why what happened happened. Eventually I was so filled by curiosity and researched it, and I found something written by the author talking about her own experience, getting letters from people asking her why she wrote it. Her explanation of what she was going through at the time helped add so much more sense to the story. It’s a story about being harmed and hated and not knowing why, a journey through the phenomenology of the experience.

I like simple books like these with meaningful endings. (Only 19 pages). It wouldn't surprise me if The Hunger Games was inspired by this story.

Well done Shirley Jackson
