lol it's so funny how my feelings about these books change as i reread them - least favourite? what? upping to 5. love.
--------------------------------
it was interesting rereading this one as it is definitely my least favourite. i really really want to punch curran in this one. i'm disappointed in doolittle. i love christopher. totally going to reread iron and magic when i'm done with rereading kate daniels.
--------------------------------
i have mixed feelings about this.
on one hand, i loved it. it's kate daniels. i loved that it was different, with the travel and whatnot. i love kate and curran and all the other characters. i couldn't put it down because yaass kate daniels i heart you and this world.
on the other hand, i did not love it.
oh and the whole marriage thing.. what? i just assumed shapeshifters didn't take marriage as seriously as, say, you and me. because he calls her his wife in previous books? so yeah. when that's talked about it just seemed a bit odd. i don't know.
basically i was not Curran's biggest fan in this book, no sirree.
Aunt B! sad face. i accidentally spoiled her death when i googled ot see if Andrea and Raphael have a kid (i always want to know if people have babies). but still. sad face.
Doolittle! Boo he's injured,I'm sure he'll get better. but BOO he looked at Kate like he was scared of her or that she wasn't one of them. I know she's not. But that paragraph was highlighted, so I kept expecting to see more from that, or maybe it will come up in the next book? disappointed in you Doolittle. DIS.A.PPOINT.ED.
The whole Hugh thing.. I am intrigued. I read a Q&A where the authors mentioned that he would never be a good guy - but, er, doesn't he have a book coming out? Iron and Magic? We gonna be reading about a bad guy? I don't care but... whaaat. Maybe I will get my questions answered in book 7.
i think that's all my feelings. so... i don't know what to rate it. because it made me cranky and there were lots of holes that other people have mentioned in their reviews, so it wasn't just the things that made me cranky mentioned above. so. i think 4 stars? so yeah. book 7, you best be better! curran, you got some slack to pick up.

Spoiler
wtf curran? WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK WAS THAT SHIT. look, the doing it didn't bother me. but i expected gold star grovelling and got fucking bronze or some shit. NOT ENOUGH. i wanted more apologies, more shove it in your face to that lorelai bitch. no, i never believed he actually liked her or whatever, but his actions really hurt my poor feewings. yes him following Kate was all the yes and his apology was very good but after that shit i wanted GREAT. i felt kate's pain even if i knew it wasn't real, you know? BOO HISS Curran. BOO. not happy JAN.oh and the whole marriage thing.. what? i just assumed shapeshifters didn't take marriage as seriously as, say, you and me. because he calls her his wife in previous books? so yeah. when that's talked about it just seemed a bit odd. i don't know.

I have been reading the Kate Daniels books pretty much back-to-back, and I do not know how the IA have managed to keep them interesting and engaging, but they do.
Yes, there was a lot of drama in this book, but since it is not my story to tell, I welcome it. Also, I thought they did a GREAT job telling the whole story here, not just focusing on the drama. There were also some awesome fight scenes, between Kate and Hugh, between Kate and monsters, and the scene when Kate finds the shepard(its been a few days and a few books, this is what he called himself, right?) after almost drowning is interesting. There is plenty of information in this book, and it is not really centered around Kate and Curran.

The plot moves forward!
Not that it didn't before. Things come to a head in this one. That's both my favorite feature and my one complaint. There is too much going on in this book. But it is nice to see the greater plot move forward. It is a sign of the authors' skill that there is also great character development in the midst of all of this.

As the sixth installment in the Kate Daniels series, Magic Rises proves that this series has not lost its flavour. An absolute joy to read, Kate remains a stellar protagonist—strong, sharp-witted, and endlessly compelling. I adored how the tension and jealousy in her relationship with Curran were explored in this book. It added a layer of complexity and revitalized their dynamic. And Hugh as a villain? LOVE. He’s cunning, charismatic, and obsessed with Kate. What a whacko.
That said, there were some rough spots. A lot of my favorite side characters, like Derek and Andrea, felt underutilized, which was disappointing. The novellas that bridge the gaps between the main books seem to hold much of their individual development, which left me feeling out of the loop when certain relationships popped up out of nowhere in the mainline series. And while I appreciated the strain on Kate and Curran’s relationship, Curran’s behavior crossed the line into outright publically humiliating Kate. I wish she had held him more accountable—it felt like he got off too easily. The pack politics were another weak point for me; they just didn’t hold my interest.
But alas, this is very quickly becoming my comfort series to read, and I can't wait to read more. 4/5 stars
