An adventurous romp through an enchanted hotel that leads around the world! This book is just plain fun. It’s full of danger, shifting alliances and dastardly villains (though you don’t always know who they are). My heart went out to Cam as he searched for the truth about his father and struggled to deal with the realities of his family’s situation, including his sister’s failing health. The Hotel is incredibly imaginative, and it becomes a character itself in many ways. I’ll admit that I did sometimes get lost in the details of how the Hotel “worked” (there were special doors and hinge pins and something called binding that I never fully understood), but maybe middle grade readers will let those details go? Or maybe they’ll be able to picture it all better than I could, who knows? Overall, a fun and engaging read with some nice messages as well.

The premise of this book is original and interesting.  A magic hotel that leads to different areas of the world.  I like the idea and the characters were interesting.  I just had a hard time following some of the aspects of the hotel and how it worked.  I enjoyed it overall and the ending was well done and satisfying.

I’m really disappointed that this wasn’t mainly about the traveling to other parts of the world aspect. I feel like most of the time was spent inside the hotel… but it’s about a hotel with doors to other places so I thought it would focus on that a lot but it doesn’t? I don’t think it was wrong for me to expect that and I’m just really disappointed. I also don’t like how every middle grade book needs to have an adult that’s out to get the kid. Like really why is it in every middle grade book. I don’t like to leave bad reviews but the cover literally portrays different parts of the world on it so I thought it would focus on going to other places for more than just a few pages each. Why would you market it that way when really the main plot is about the main character trying to get his dad back. I know it says that in the description but that is most of the plot. It’s all the main character thinks about, that and worrying about his other family. The whole book is just him worrying and barely finding out anything so it’s just kind of repetitive with his thoughts throughout the whole thing. I think middle grade is just not for me because I don’t enjoy them as much. The cover and concept just seemed so cool. I really do think there should have been more time spent going to cool places. The cover makes it seem like it’s a fun adventure travel book but it’s really not. They spend most of the time inside of the hotel rather than visiting fun places and having a good time. The best part is the ending, it’s really nice and I enjoyed the room full of cats. It makes me want to read the next book because it seems like it might be filled with more traveling and nice fun adventures

I was lucky enough to read a couple of versions of this story as it evolved and it is such a fantastically fun adventure! Grand Budapest Hotel for middle-grade with a big helping of heartfelt family mystery and very cool magic.

A boy discovers a hotel that can transport you to other worlds, countries, etc. After he becomes employed in the hotel, he discovers that something much more sinister is going on. Him and his friends take on the bad guys and, well, you have to read it! Cute MG fantasy.
