Liz Cheney is a GD hero. History will reflect that. It's too late to recommend that everyone read this book before they head to the ballot box, but the people that really need to read it are so drunk on the Flavor-Aid, they wouldn't get anything out of it anyway.

Borrowed this audiobook, narrated by Cheney herself, from the library's Libby app.

Wow. Liz Cheney's commitment to her morals is refreshing and remarkable. Her ability to stay true to her oath to uphold the United States Constitution at her own political peril is truly exceptional.

Anyone who doesn't feel like they understand what happened on January 6, 2021 will benefit greatly from this book. The events of the 2020 election and following chaos are laid out clearly and thoughtfully with no room to misinterpret. The facts are clear and receipts are shown.

Not for the faint-hearted, this book provides additional details regarding the events of January 6, 2024 and the roles of Donald Trump, citizens, Capital Police, and Members of Congress.

I would have given it more stars if she had acknowledged the history behind this event, how the policies of other Republicans had set the stage for this to happen, and dangling Chad and the Supreme Court’s ruling’s impact on our system.

I’m sending this book to a Republican who can’t decide how to vote.

I have never read a book so poignant and so eloquently written. There has not been such a sobering testament to our times as this. The warning states clearly the position we are all in leading towards November.

I’m going to preface my review by saying that I am not a party voter. I am an issue voter. This is not to sway anyone one way or the other.

I have always been a Liz Cheney fan just based on her conviction and genuine need to fight for the right thing according to her beliefs. I however have not always agreed with her politics.
This book gave me so much insight on January 6th from the eyes of someone that was there. I have an immense respect for those in government that stood up against what happened that day. I do not believe it was right or just to go and try to stop the vote. The amount of ignorance it takes to support that blows me away. I remember watching on the news and being so unbelievably disappointed in the people standing there trying to insight violence. I was even more disappointed in former president Trump for his choice to not support his vice president and get people riled up to commit crimes. This book helped me understand multiple different perspectives and I felt it was factual. The processes that our representatives go through to vote things into law is very interesting to me and I appreciate the democracy we have for what it is. There is always progress to be made but January 6th brought us backwards in history. If there’s one thing I learned in history class it’s that we must know our history so it doesn’t repeat itself. I feel not enough people go out of there way to know history and so our consequence is going backwards and reliving the hard things we should have learned from unfortunately. My hope is more people will read and not just follow. no matter what side of the road you are on taking rights away from people that are different from you and marching with guns on the capital is not the answer. I got a lot out of this book and I extremely recommend it to anyone wanting more insight into what happened on Jan 6th and the inner working of government and the people we voted into office. It is very much so worth your time!

I enjoyed the book overall. Could have used a bit more editing to catch some of the typos and to streamline it a little bit. It was fairly easy reading but did drag at parts, especially near the end.

She opened the prologue by saying, "This is the story of the moment when American democracy began to unravel." I disagree with that statement. In the last chapter, she says "The United States is proof that human freedom can survive what has destroyed other democracies over millennia of human history. At no prior point in my life had I believed that we were on the precipice of losing that legacy." I believe that's the more accurate statement. It's not the moment things started to unravel. It's the moment she realized things were unraveling.

From a previous chapter, '"Supporting Josh and trying so hard to get him elected to the Senate was the worst mistake I ever made in my life," legendary former Missouri Republican Senator Jack Danforth said after the January 6 riots.' The Republicans had been pushing for these people to be in charge. Had they pushed for other things we wouldn't have ended up here. It's not "the moment it happened," the destruction was built with carefully placed dominoes.

I did appreciate a lot of what she had to say and am grateful that she did help lead the charge for sanity in the end.

For legal reasons: This review is a satire and parody. I would totally never think that Trump is anything but the best president ever.

TLDR: READ THIS BOOK (listen to it on Audible, the audiobook is really good)

If you’re looking for a gripping, eye-opening read (or an equally fantastic audiobook experience), I can’t recommend this book enough.

Before diving into the book, I didn’t know much about Liz Cheney beyond the fact that she’s Dick Cheney’s daughter—yes, the former Vice President under George W. Bush. Let’s be honest: I haven’t been a fan of the Bush-Cheney administration. I strongly disagreed with many of their policies, especially the tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy and decisions that shaped their legacy. But here’s the thing: I can live with policy disagreements. I can accept that people have different perspectives on government and economics.

What baffles me, however, is the unraveling of democratic principles—and that’s where Donald Trump enters the picture. Trump has done more than make American politics divisive and polarized. He’s turned it into a toxic battlefield of personal attacks and disinformation, culminating in an assault on the very foundations of our democracy. His inability to accept losing the 2020 election led directly to the storming of the U.S. Capitol—a violent insurrection that left people fearing for their lives and even dying. Trump’s actions before, during, and after that day are not just unethical; they’re criminal.

Liz Cheney’s book sheds an unflinching light on all of this. While I don’t agree with all of her political positions—she didn’t vote to impeach Trump over the Zelensky call, and her economic views don’t align with mine—I deeply respect the stand she’s taken. She sacrificed her political career to expose the truth about Trump’s months-long campaign to overturn the election results. She doesn’t just make claims; she names names, provides evidence, and reveals Trump’s schemes.

Before reading, I thought the Capitol insurrection was a relatively spontaneous event spurred by a few of Trump’s tweets. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Cheney reveals how meticulously Trump plotted to cling to power, disregarding the Constitution and the rule of law. And while many Republicans fell in line with him, some—like Cheney herself—chose to uphold their oaths to the Constitution, even at great personal and political cost. It’s chilling to think about what might have happened if they hadn’t.

This is more than a book about one person or one event. It’s a stark reminder of what’s at stake when truth and democracy are under siege. Whether or not you agree with Cheney’s politics, her courage and commitment to the truth deserve recognition.
