This is the first in a series of mystery novels based on the cases of a special Canadian investigation unit, Detective Rachel Getty and her boss, Esa Khattak. When a local man, Christopher Drayton, “allegedly“ falls off a cliff they need to find out if it was suicide, murder, or something even more nefarious. The investigation uncovers that Drayton may have been living under an assumed name and was actually a war criminal with ties to the Srebrenica massacre of 1995.

A wonderful mystery set against the memory of the Serbian genocide in the 1990s. Very grateful for the recommended reading at the back of the book. The mystery was great, but more intriguing was all I learned about the Bosnian conflict. Looking forward to reading more of the author's work.

I initally was pulled in by the familiar setting and characters - it really feels like a Toronto book - but ended up loving this mystery. It took me a long time to get past the first few chapters but after that i sped through this.

It took me a bit to get into this, and the writing felt a little clunky at times, but I ended up being completely drawn into this unique mystery with depth. There was a historical component to it that I appreciated, harrowing as it was.

This could have been so good! But it wasn't. The characters were boring and the plot details lacking in thought. The author seems to be trying really, really hard to create characters from different ethnic and class backgrounds so that they have different perspectives, but one comes across as cold and arrogant, and the other a dolt.

This book was so, so bad. A pity because the premise was great and really well researched, but it was just super misogynistic and had weird plot holes and the sentence ‘Melanie arranged her breasts on the table like two giant lumps of unbaked bread’ is unforgivable.
