Another awesome story from the mind of Aurora Rose Reynolds!
This story was fast-paced, sexy and sweet. Kai was the perfect blend of Alpha and romantic. The story packed just enough suspense and drama to keep it interesting but so much that it was too hard to follow along with.
At times it felt like things were moving a little too fast but in the end it all came together just right.
I'm looking forward to reading Sven and Maggie's story next!!

*I received an ARC from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review

*some spoilers*
Okay, I must admit, I read this one because :
1) the main guy was named Kai and he was Hawaiian (MAAAAACEEE I MISS YOU <3)
2) there were some mob stories
3) it took place in Hawaii =)
Aaaand I was disappointed =S The plot was not complex enough (Thad was killed too easily and we didn't really understand why there was as much fussing around her parents' death, her inheritance etc etc...), there were some strange things (Sophie has been raped for years but POUF she met Kai and no problem, sex everywhere !! And the fact that the book began a little bit in the middle of the story ...)
And the TOTALLY GROSS moment : when Kai actually cut the penis of the bad guy and put it into his throat ... UUUUUGGGGGHHH !!

Obligation is the second book in the Underground Kings series, but it can be read as a standalone.

Myla and Kai knew each other when they were children, but circumstances had Myla leaving her home. Years later, she’s in danger and finds herself married to Kai, who marries her to protect her.

So, Kai and Myla got married in Hawai’i and are currently living there. First, I just kept getting taken out of the story because everything was “Hawaiian” (i.e. Hawaiian sun, Hawaiian sunrise, Hawaiian beach). Just because they’re in Hawai’i does not mean certain things are “Hawaiian”. It just bothered me.

Anyway, I also didn’t really see the connection between Kai and Myla. Myla didn’t know what was going on for a majority of the story, and Kai purposely kept her in the dark. He was very protective, but he also created unnecessary problems in trying to protect Myla.

This was fast-paced and had action and suspense, just like the first book. It wasn’t my favorite, but I will still be reading the next book.

This book was weird. I'm still kind of confused; there was too much going on at once, and for the first half of the book, I struggled to understand the connection between Kai and Myla. I still think the original connection between them was exaggerated and too hyped.

Overall, this series has not impressed me much so far.

DNF at 24%. No coherent plot, ridiculous characters. I'm too old to read poorly written books.

Trigger warning: mentions of rape

2.5 stars

I usually love ARR books, but I really didn’t like this one.
I couldn't connect with the mc, especially the hero. I liked Myla for the most part, but I still don't understand why she agreed to marry him when she literally had just met him, I get it was for 'protection', but it didn't really make sense.
It was also a bit boring for a mafia story, but maybe it's just me.

Safety:
-The h was raped
Spoilerby her adoptive brother
, it's only mentioned
-Violence: usual mafia novel violence, plus
Spoiler the hero avenges the heroine by torturing her rapist and killing him

-No cheating
-Om drama: a guy is in love with Myla but it's one sided and nothing happens between them
-Ow drama: she finds out
Spoiler her lawyer
is his ex girlfriend
-Epilogue a year and 4 years later

This book starts as Myla wakes up with a new wedding ring on her finger. She seems drained and traumatized by recent events. As the plot opens up more it's revealed that she's married to Kai in a ploy to protect her after she was attacked at her place of business in Seattle. The prologues reveal that when she was a young girl, her parents grudgingly sent her away to protect her, but before she left she met Kai one night as he comforted her in her tree house and pledged to protect her. As Myla starts to acclimate to Kai's Hawaiian paradise, it becomes obvious that Kai has a soft spot for her and truly wants to protect her. She's still too shaken to see things clearly and feels a bit of a burden and just at a loss. She's just getting used to Kai's longing looks and having body guards accompany her everywhere, when she's more or less ambushed into meeting Kai's family. She's freaked because she feels like this ruse of a marriage will only hurt his family and she's not comfortable with their lies. It takes some convincing but he gets her to be on board with trying to have a real relationship with each other. It doesn't take long for her to then get swept off her feet. However, Kai is involved in some heavy business and Myla still has threats working against her. They get thrown some curveballs that test their relationship and ultimately make the story more intriguing.

I feel a bit undecided about this story. On one hand, I really enjoyed all the intrigue as well as the characters. But I never felt fully connected with them or their troubles. I think it is just a matter of personal preference for me. At this point, I've read numerous novels by this same author, and my best guess is that her writing style just doesn't mesh well with my reading style. She's excellent at packing a lot of events into a story so I'm kept on my toes. However, I feel like I'm on an amusement park ride where I'm being turned frequently and in an almost disorienting fashion. I don't know if she needs to work on her transitions, or what would help, but I felt like this story jumped around a lot and maybe that's why I never really got a chance to settle into the story and be in the moment with the characters; because no singular part of the book really lasted for long, moments came and went quickly.

While that may very well be just a personal difference between me and the author, I do have a solid complaint about how she opened the book. I felt like I was missing a huge part of the story. It felt as though I had forgotten everything that had happened to Myla and Kai in the previous novel. So, I went back and reread the first book of the series, and it turned out to be absolutely no help. Granted, Aurora Rose Reynolds did finally reveal some of the secrets that helped to make the start of the story a bit clearer, but by the time she did, it didn't feel nearly as relevant. I hated that feeling, that I felt lasted a bit too long, when the book opened and I felt like we were already halfway through the book and I had just missed out on what had previously occurred. It felt even more strange because she included two prologues form Myla's early years, so it gave the impression that she wanted to give a well rounded back story. The imbalance left me feeling a bit bereft. Granted, that lack of balance eventually evened out, but like I mentioned, it wasn't quite as intriguing since I had already moved on from my lack of understanding.

I look forward to see what comes next for this series. I imagine I'll have similar issues with the writing style that I've had with most of the author's books, but I still like the intrigue and unpredictability of her books. Next up, it's Sven's turn. At the very end of this book, we see Sven, perhaps, living with is assistant, Maggie, and there's definitely something going on there,, that should prove interesting.
