This is part 2 in the series and in a way I was scared because a part 2 needs to stand up to the one that I liked so much. I need not have worried. It stands up and ties in with the story line in part 1 well
The book starts off with a bit much in the way of introduction again - could have done with out that, but I guess it is needed of part 2 is the first one picked up.
What did I like; The characters; they are well written have their flaws but are very very human. Specifically Gabriel and Mia are favorites.of mine. Mia is flawed to a point where you just want to shake her and tell her to really get a life. Gabriel could be helped with a a bit more in depth character description, but he just seems like a nice nerd.
In the book here is a bit much in the plot jumping - several suspects are convincing, but the reality is some of them twists are just plain stupid in the follow up.
Also the build up of suspense is great; the weaving in with real life events and historical things (the family in Australia, read up on those) are done well. Some are a bit far fetched. And though there is a real ending - as said lots of loose threats as happens in real life.
What I did not like; seems being related or known to Holger Munch is a dangerous thing, who is next? Plus the daughter TBH seems a bit of a silly cow at times. Plus what happened to Rolf? He is important at the start and then falls off all radars without follow ups.
I did not really like the amounts of alcohol consumed. No way that those copious amounts of it would help anybody in their thinking. Plus consuming hem in bars; honestly with the prices in Norway they'd be broke.
More than part 1 this sequel is written open-ended and with a lot of room for new developments in the plot that can be used in another part of the series. Obviously that is going to happen. And I think I will enjoy them.

I loved the first book. However, this one seems to have the same formula as the first. Someone from Holgers family is involved, Mia is still drunk and wants to die, Mia is the one who, again, ends up finding the killers “lair” alone. I was super interested in the beginning, but so many things just felt so contrived. The suspense I felt in the first book was gone. I want to read the third book, but my hopes are not high.

I liked the first in this series more. There’s just way too many details that it starts to get monotonous. Almost like reading a Lincoln Rhyme novel on steroids crossed with the Dragon Tattoo series.
Scandi Noir is a go-to genre for me and Samuel Bjørk, (pen name of Norwegian playwright and singer/songwriter Frode Sander Øien), certainly knows how to use the genre to write a solid Nordic crime series.
The owl always hunts at night is the second in the Holger Munch and Mia Krüger series by Bjørk, a follow up from I’m Travelling Alone which I read back in 2022. Why has it taken me so long to get to the second book? I guess my tastes in this genre have changed a little and I’m becoming increasingly particular around the authors I want to invest in. Some of the Scandi series I’m reading simply because I want to work my way through them, others I savour and look forward to each instalment with incredible eagerness and anticipation. This one falls a little more into the former even though it was definitely an enjoyable and satisfying read.
This one centres around a horrific murder (very much in this genre in terms of its gruesomeness) where a young woman is found surrounded by feathers set up in a pentagram formation. Munch and Krüger come together again as a crime solving duo except they’re not so much a duo this time. Bjørk didn’t quite extend the characters enough for me to get to know them truly and they remained a bit aloof to me, likeable but no connection with me as the reader and participant. As per last time, the story and plot is a little cliche at times, not enough to turn me off but definitely keeps the book at a 4 star read for me - maybe 3.5 but rounded up.

Typical Nordic thriller, with a lot of cold, heavy atmospheres, very much alcohol and mental discomfort. As always happens with genre fiction from those countries, the inner turmoil of the characters is not only described, but becomes an integral part of the discovery of the mystery process. In other words, the inner torment of the protagonists isn't of distubance to the investigations but becomes the engine of them. Impeccable until the final, which I found a bit too hasty and confused.
