Just an undeniably incredible read. Heartbreaking and awful to read, but so beautifully written and moving.

this book is, understandably, incredibly dark. taking place in war-torn Afghanistan, these personal stories get to the root of the effects of war, traditionalism, womanhood, religion, and so much more. gorgeous prose and insightful storytelling. i would be very cautious and cognizant that you are in a decent mental health space before you read this book because it is nothing short of brutal from beginning to end.

I didn’t particularly like the writing (although it was beautiful) and the story itself, which was very hard to read. The characters were so lovable and it was really sad to read every hard and terrible thing they suffered. It’s a book that I’ll probably remember forever, even if it’s not the most fun or beautiful book I’ve read, because it made me think and it affected me so much.

This book is a solid four. I do recommend it, but it isn’t one of my favorites. The book focuses on women written by a man. It is a little hard to connect to that.
It is definitely heartbreaking and touching. You can feel it all. Great book.

Very emotional read about female solidarity, misogyny and the search for redemption and life's meaning. Found the two female protagonist perspectives to be highly convincing and engaging and shed many tears towards the end! A challenging read which is made all the more emotionally harrowing given Kabul's current conflicts.
