I have to be honest: most of what I've learned about the trouble in Afghanistan comes from both of Hosseini's books. I find his characters believable and relateable, and I think he did an excellent job creating two very real, believable, and sympathetic female characters in this book.

I couldn't put this book down: I read it in a day. I may have even liked it better than "The Kite Runner."

I can’t decide between 4 or 5 stars as this novel emotionally and physically ruined me but the ending was absolutely amazing.

While reading this book I was not happy. In fact, at one point I felt like I was going to barf, but isn’t that a good thing. A book should make you feel strong emotions and boy does this book.

I only recommend this novel if you think you’re mentally prepared for something that is incredibly depressing. I also don’t recommend it if sexual content or discussion of pregnancy makes you uncomfortable.

In the book:
Women must endure until the end. They are built to be the obedient one, the fragile one so that they must endure any kind of violences the society suppressed them about.

This isn’t about one side fight. Men should encourage and support women. There’s no win in this fight cause we are only human with different types of body, emotion, and mind. But we need to know, without good women, the world is corrupt. End the cycle.

Such a heartbreaking but beautiful story. For me, this is the best way to learn about the history of another culture - to see it through the eyes of the characters that are living it. Nothing can give you a truer picture of the suffering than experiencing it for yourself, through the pages of a book.

A moving story of two women in the most tragic of circumstances. With so many moving parts out of their control, it was so moving to see the journey that Miriam and Layla went on from childhood through to adulthood.
