Oh my word what an unlikeable bunch of people!
So Many Lies is a book that most certainly lives up to its name! The story follows the somewhat screwed up life (all his own doing) of Ben Harrington who seems to have taken a life long path of least effort and least resistance.
Even he can see that his little affair and weak nature mean that he has lost a wife, family and beautiful house in exchange for a woman he isn't even sure he likes, a starter home, a baby he isn't sure he wants and a whole heap of debt!
Ben Harrington isn't a man who can be accused of learning from his mistakes so he blunders on, ignoring good advice and offers of help and digs himself further into debt in order to attend his Dad's 70th birthday.
The story flicks between past and present day as it builds up towards the conclusion with lies scattering in the air like old confetti - it's a humdinger - hold on to your hat!

There’s a famous quote in To kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee “you can choose your friends but you sho’ cant choose your family. Well after meeting the Harringtons this is definitely one family you wouldn’t choose to be part of that’s for sure.
What a bunch of lying conniving deviants, so much so that even self absorbed, weak Ben starts to come off as one of the better members of the family. I’ve always had a soft spot for baddies, I find them much more interesting, I could take my pick with this lot.
The use of alternating a dual timeline really worked using past and present to bring gravity to the life changing consequences. The pace is fast and really revs up as lie after lie is revealed. The characters were shockingly brilliant and the writing kept me enthralled. This is a very accomplished thriller and to sum this book up in one word CHAMPION.

Ben is quite weak in character. Having had a midlife crisis, he ends up throwing away a happy marriage and family life and is now with the woman he had a fling with, with a new born baby in a loveless relationship. His life isn’t going anywhere and financially he is pretty screwed. His dads birthday comes as a bit of welcome relief. A little family holiday on a private island, even I was a tad envious.
The story flicks between past and present so we get to know more about the Harringtons. From the outset, Ben’s parents are the pillar of the community with a young family and a thriving business. We get to learn more about each family member. As well as a few of their lies. Well I say a few, heck this is one family that is full of them!
The title without a doubt fits perfectly for what is within this books pages. Things get really interesting when all the family come together on the island. Ben ended up surprising me and is definitely something of an anti hero. I loved getting to know this family better as well as the dynamics within it.
So Many Lies is one warped and compulsive read. The lies start coming thick and fast and I couldn’t get enough of them. It makes for some seriously gripping reading that both thrilled and excited me. A highly recommended psychological thriller that will have you racing through the pages to see how it will all end.
My thanks to the author for a readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

"When the Harrington's got together, nothing was ever simple."
So Many Lies follows the Harrington family over the course of forty years and examines the secrets they keep, the lies they tell, and the far-reaching effects it has on them all.
The Harringtons are a dysfunctional family filled with bitterness and estrangements. They rarely speak to each other let alone all get together. But when patriarch Tony Harringon turns seventy, they all answer the invitation to join a big family celebration on a private island. But things don’t go as planned as rifts lead to tense arguments and shocking secrets are revealed. And all the while there is someone lurking in the jungle waiting for their chance to seek revenge on them all...
With a family like this, who needs enemies? All families have problems but I am glad to not be part of the toxic Harrington family after reading this book. The story begins in June 2018 with Ben Harrington waking up trying to remember the night before. He soon realises something terrible happened, but is then engulfed in darkness and the story jumps back to six weeks earlier. We are then taken on a journey that spans four decades as the history of the Harrington family is slowly told and their secrets are unveiled.
Though it is told from multiple points of view, our main narrator is Ben, the forty-seven-year-old second child. Ben’s life is a mess. He had an affair that ended his marriage when she got pregnant and doesn’t know how to get out from under the personal and financial mess he’s got himself into. I found Ben to be a bit of a wet blanket and prefered the parts of the story that were from other people’s perspective, especially the villain of the story (though I’ll not say more to avoid spoilers).
For most of the book, the flashbacks were my favourite part. I enjoyed the insight into how they had become such an estranged and dysfunctional family. All the flashbacks have titles such as The First Lie and focus on significant moments - ie lies - that shaped their future. I loved how later in the book these were told again from different points of view that peeled away the layers of secrecy and revealed the truth to the reader.
This is a steadily paced, readable thriller, but as we approach the finale the tension radiates from the pages and I was on the edge of my seat as all was shockingly revealed.
