This was a fun historical novella. The author handled the identities of aueer and trans figures well. It never felt like a lecture on history. I would have enjoyed more horror elements sooner, but the real horrors of Spar Creek are the people, not the monsters!

This was a read that I found very self indulgent. I don’t think it will be for every reader, as I think a lot of what I loved about it was its resonance with my own experiences. However, it hit all the right notes for me, and was fast paced and felt like a light, cathartic read despite some heavier subject matter. The age gap could be upsetting to some but I didn’t find it particularly dwelled on or sexualized myself.

The tension was incredibly well done, the slow creep of dread as Leslie learns more about the secrets of Spar Creek climbing to its peak at the end. An excellent queer revenge story about becoming the monster they always said you were.

The descriptions of gore were a bit too much for me personally. And the age gap (30 and 18) between
Leslie and Stevie
bothered me. Definitely check the content warnings beforehand.
