I can't say I'm too fond of Before (the retelling of Wonder from Julian's point of view), but I loved Grandmère's part, even if Julian and his mom switched their positions too quickly for my taste.

I read Wonder about two years ago, so when I found out that there were short stories that went with the book I had to read them. I was very impressed by the Julian chapter. I didn't think it would be as good as it was. I loved the story his grandmother shared and how it connected to him so well.

I'm glad the author chose to continue the story of [b:Wonder|23302416|Wonder|R.J. Palacio|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1412358842s/23302416.jpg|16319487] to tell Julian's perspective. Julian's actions were fleshed out a little but still not excused away (the whole chapter centers around Julian's growth as he learns to feel remorse for his actions), and I'm happy that the author gave Julian's storyline some closure. I do think Julian's transformation happened rather suddenly (I guess Palacio was trying to make this an additional chapter to her original book, and not some kind of sequel or something), but it's nice to have some closure.

This chapter did give me some food-for-thought as a parent. How can we teach our kids empathy? How can we teach them responsibility for their actions but still be a loving parent? If the author wants to write some chapters from the perspectives of the parents in Wonder, I'd be game for that!

I'm so glad this was available at the library I really wanted to know more about Julian's perspective. I'm satisfied with how this ended and everything. The grandma omg love her wow.

3 1/2 stars -
This was an interesting follow-up to "Wonder." I enjoyed hearing the story told from Julian's point of view. I very much enjoyed the Grandmother's story, and thought that added a nice dimension to the overall tale. I didn't entirely buy Julian's realizations - they seemed a bit too easy, and out of character. However, for those who liked "Wonder," this is a great read to give a bit more dimension to the story.

This book was almost a 5 for me; just a little too much of an over-the-top characterization of the parents. I didn't expect the turn it took with the grandmother, which I liked, but found it hard to believe that she would not have told her family.
