The Julian Chapter

4.1 AVERAGE

Reminds me favorably of one of my cherished book pairs, in this case the second book [b:The Bully of Barkham Street|998976|The Bully of Barkham Street|Mary Stolz|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1180107581s/998976.jpg|598313]. Of course, telling the same story from a different perspective was successful for [b:Wonder|11387515|Wonder|R.J. This a quick read, and the plot itself was slightly above average. The history was a good fit and well done for kids who haven't delved into that yet. An unreliable narrator, Julian colors his own story, but still comes off as mostly two dimensional. Even worse is his mom, whose motivations change on a dime.

I plan to read the other two add-ons soon, and I might even return to Barkham Street in the near future.

Loved seeing Julian's road to redemption!

Not as good as Wonder, but it was nice to hear Julian’s backstory. Everyone has a story.

I didn't have high expectations for this book, and I was worried that it would somehow justify the bully, but I didn't feel like it did that. It was fun to see the story through Julian's eyes.

An interesting addition to Wonder. May it have been better served integrated with the larger novel? It's hard to say. Certainly it offers depth to Julian though I found it less to be on the side of "why" as opposed to "what next." I like the ways in which parent-child relationships are discussed, not just between Julian and his parents, but even Julian Sr. and Grandmere.

The Julian Chapter (Wonder 1.5) is like a small-sized sequel to Wonder. It is included in Wonder. It narrates the story from Julian’s point of view.

Honestly, in Wonder, I never really liked Julian and his character. He was rude and mean and just wasn’t a sympathetic or good kid. All the bullying that happened to August was narrated by Julian, expressing his feelings, what he has been doing. It was pretty much his justifying his unacceptable actions. But it was entertaining to read. My favourite part was where his grandmother tells him her childhood story. It was really emotional and was the turning point in their lives. The climax was pleasant and satisfying.

I guess both the books are good enough to read.
