I enjoyed my time with this book. The strongest element is the reflection the main character experiences during her time alone. There’s no sugarcoating her true feelings on the previous society, the people that inhabited it or the structures that were once imposed on those people. She grapples with loss and her new sense of self that is focused on the survival of the animals around her. I understand why this is book is a feminist classic and thought it did an excellent job of expressing those ideas in her reflections.

The way the author was able to use anthropomorphism to give the animals in the story distinct personalities was well done.

With that being said, the book can be repetitive and a slog at times. I understand the need for that, but it could have been trimmed down a bit. You better enjoy reading about potato harvests and mundane farm work if you’re going to make it to the end.

Overall this is a solid read that I’d recommend to everyone.

The first 20 pages had me fully engaged and excited. The next 200 pages were a slog. She could have shaved 100 pages off the repetitious farming activities and still conveyed the reflections she sought to.

I can deeply appreciate this books importance and there are some beautiful bits in here. However I found reading it a bit of a slog and experienced major anxiety related to the impending animal death continually referenced throughout the book.

"There is no impulse more rational than love."

This book was weird because nothing really happened?? I loved the descriptions, especially the narrator's relationships with the animals (Bella, Lynx, Tiger, Pearl, etc.), but truly nothing happened. The whole book was just about how she adapted to life within the confines of the wall, but I kept waiting for an explanation, which made the events at the end so jarring because there was no explanation for what happened. Very weird...
