This book was weird because nothing really happened?? I loved the descriptions, especially the narrator's relationships with the animals (Bella, Lynx, Tiger, Pearl, etc.), but truly nothing happened. The whole book was just about how she adapted to life within the confines of the wall, but I kept waiting for an explanation, which made the events at the end so jarring because there was no explanation for what happened. Very weird...

Read this for my local bookstore’s book club and wow what an absolute bummer. Interesting story but this hit me right in the existential dread.
Op mijn boek zit een sticker "herontdekt meesterwerk". Na het lezen van dit boek vraag ik me af waarom dit een meesterwerk is? De boodschap van het boek is mooi. We hebben het leven niet in de hand en moeten het nemen zoals het komt. Wij mensen zijn gedoemd om overal een betekenis achter te zoeken, maar die is er vaak helemaal niet. Het gaat over liefde (vooral tussen mens en dier), verlies en eenzaamheid. Maar dat alles maakt een boek nog niet tot een meesterwerk. Marlen Haushofer kan zeker mooi schrijven. Het boek staat vol mooie zinnen. Alleen is na een aantal bladzijden de boodschap wel duidelijk. Daarna vervalt het boek in voortdurende herhalingen: houthakken, slapen, houthakken slapen, verdwenen kat, houthakken, jagen, slapen, houthakken slapen, verdwenen kat, ... Ik wilde alleen nog maar dat het boek snel zou eindigen. Maar net zoals de hoofdpersoon ergens zegt dat ze te oud is om serieus aan zelfmoord te denken, was ik al te ver in het boek om serieus aan stoppen te denken. Het eind is alsnog enigszins verrassend (niet helemaal vanwege de vooruitwijzingen in het boek). Helaas kan ik er niet meer dan 2 sterren voor geven.

A beautiful tale of a woman who's forced to live on her own in the countryside. She's not extradordinary or especially skilled and yet she makes due with what life has presented itself to her. A feminist classic for me.
There are no chapters, but I was surprised how easily I could follow along with no breaks. I felt emotional over the animals and loved her resilience and commitment to life. Connection, even if it's solely animals, make life seem living. I'm biased to love this writing style of entertwining the past and present contexually. The slow pacing is necessary, but hard for me to read nonetheless.
Definitely recommend if you would like a female-centric Robinson Crusoe with lovable animals and a soft pace.
