This was cute and a nice distraction during the holidays.

I will say, it's fascinating they would title this A WINTER in New York, when sure the book opens with a chapter in February, but most of it takes place in October and November. It's not until like 2/3 into the book that we finally hit December (and if I wanted to be truly annoying, winter isn't until the week before Christmas, so even less winter here lol).

I don't think I love a lying trope, especially when it's stacked with multiple lies and goes on for so long. If I remove the lies and essentially pretend to be Gio – I had a great time in the love story between him and Iris. I also enjoyed the few flashbacks to Iris's mom as it built a similar feeling as One Italian Summer did (just not as sad) when I read it.

Iris has moved to New York to escape an abusive relationship. Within 10 months, she's found a job, an apartment, and two neighbor best friends. When looking through her mom's old photos, she found the storefront of a local gelato shop so she sets out to experience it for herself. When Iris gets there, she meets Gio. He shares that his uncle is sick and the shop is in jeopardy as the secret family recipe for their one flavor is only known to the uncle.

With her chef background, Iris offers to help him solve this recipe riddle, so he provides a small sample that she immediately recognizes as the exact flavor her mom always made for her before she passed. Knowing the recipe is meant to be a protected family secret, Iris is caught between helping this business get back on their feet or protecting the once-in-a-lifetime relationship her mom and his uncle had decades before.

Great Holiday romance! The characters really build and come alive in a way that makes you believe in the relationships growing in the story. The “keeping a secret trope” frustrates me because it borders on a miscommunication trope, but that’s just personal preference.
