“Once upon a time — for that is how all stories should begin — there was a boy who lost his mother.”
A classic way to start a book possessing anecdotes of loss, war, imagination, magic, survival, and love, all seamlessly integrated with twisted yet intriguing versions of the fairy tales we’ve all enjoyed reading while growing up.
My rating: 4.5/5

definitely one of my favorite books of all time, I always find myself coming back to this book every few year to reread it. Connolly's writing never seems to lose that magic touch <3

3.75 stars? I ended up liking this book far more than I expected to. The writing was not exactly elegant, but the story was satisfying enough to make up for it. Though I found the first half a bit clumsy and frustrating at times, I thoroughly enjoyed everything from the huntress encounter onwards, and feel that a reread would definitely put the first half of the book into better perspective (though the chapters spent with the dwarves I still think were ridiculously out of place).
One last point of note - whoever decided that this book was suitable for 'ages 10+' must not have read it. There is graphic gore, violence and very dark themes, and much more than I expected, at that!
