Written by Sanderson for George R R Martin’s collection of stories about dangerous women. I loved it! I struggled to date it because I think as far as short stories goes, it was five stars, however compared to my other five stars on this app it is obviously not as developed or quite on their level.
The premise is: a widow innkeeper keeps an eye out for criminals who pass through her inn, drugs them, and then follows them out into the woods to kill them and turn them in for their bounty. However, the woods are full of Shades who kill humans and are attracted to blood, swift movements, and the starting of fires, so she has to get creative in how she kills.
I loved it, it had a fun little twist at the end. I wonder if he would write another book in this world. I would totally read it. I love how Sanderson writes women—celebrating their femininity while also making them powerful/dangerous. I kind of wish it was scarier! But it was a fun thriller.
