NOTE TO SECRET PROJECT COSMERE READERS: I had picked this title up upon reading one of Sanderson's secret novels when "Threnody" was mentioned at an early point. I put a pause on that book and read this with the hope that it would provide better context for what came after the Threnody mention in the Sunlit Man...
Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell was originally part of George R. R. Martin's [b:Dangerous Women|17279560|Dangerous Women|George R.R. Martin|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1370759802l/17279560._SY75_.jpg|19236677], a collection featuring short stories with 'women capable of great magic, violence and mayhem'. Funny story - I discovered that I already owned this collection for a [a:Jim Butcher|10746|Jim Butcher|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1400640324p2/10746.jpg] title!
In the foreword, Sanderson mentions that the development of this title begins as early as 1999/2000, so it would be one of the earliest Cosmere stories. It certainly feels to be the case, as there is little connection to his other Cosmere tales.
The premise is simple: a widowed proprietor of an inn/bar situated in the forested frontiers of a very harsh world (plagued by spirits that will wither travellers away to the form of shades that will join their ranks). She also secretly moonlights as a bounty hunter of very dangerous men, and this evening's barflies happen to include a gang of VERY. DANGEROUS. MEN. The game is afoot when she discovers the identity of these criminals and decides to pay a visit to the Forests of Hell...
It is a decent, unique sort of story...however definitley not the top of Sanderson's craft.
