Based on the portrayal of female characters, this was definitely written by a man. It was mostly fun, though! It’s kinda like Avatar the last air bender mixed with your standard fantasy plot.
Pretty standard horse and sword fantasy - I prefer the dresden books but these were pretty good too.

3.5. That was fun. Several POVs, alternating. Tavi had some good growth. The twist wasn’t much of a twist. I feel confident that the remaining open issues (who his father is, Kitai, etc) aren’t going to be particularly surprising and will be covered in the next book(s).

This was a very enjoyable fantasy adventure, that was tense but not overwhelmingly dark. It read quickly for me, and there was a lot of skill in the writing, treating the reader with intelligence and respect. The characters are complex, which I particularly appreciate on the “bad guy” side of things. Content warnings for several heavy topics however.
Graphic: Gore, Infidelity, Rape, Sexism, Slavery, Violence, Trafficking, Kidnapping, Murder, War, Injury/Injury detail

There was much that I liked about this book. I liked the characters. I liked that there were strong capable women, as well as men. I like that the "villains" weren't just simply evil, they were believable. You could almost sympathize with them, or at least understand that they were just misguided or bad people. I really enjoyed the concept of power via the furies, although I had a hard time not pronouncing it furry in my head. I loved the imagery of how the power of the furies manifested, and how each had different (and sometimes not expected) ways of counteracting their power. This was a good fantasy book that managed to deal really well with the relationships between people, which is hard to find sometimes.
I gave this book 3 stars because there were just too many fight scenes for my likes. I got really weary of it by the end. I felt like the last 25% of the book, nearly every scene was just another fight. It could have been a bit more well balanced, and the build up of tension wasn't quite as finesse-ful as in other books I've read.
I'm still undecided about reading further in the series, but after the frustration I felt when I finished it has worn off a bit I'll probably be more inclined.

I liked that this book kept changing character perception. I thought the middle of the book was slow but quite liked the ending.
I really liked this book. It's been a while since I read such a classic fantasy story. I like the twist that the special thing about the protagonist is that he doesn't have special powers like everybody else.
Very outdated, does not age well, too many characters to keep track of, and plot that really doesn’t go anywhere
