I can’t explain it beyond you can just tell this was written by a man. Not for meeeeee.
Entertaining. I like the magic system. Sassy women. Pretty typical feudalism/ medieval world, but some fun creatures & characters z
Decent fantasy series opener. If you hadn't told me this was Jim Butcher, I wouldn't have guessed. A lot of the characteristic snark and humor that's part of the Dresden files is missing here. That said, it's still a fun read with lots of well thought out and developed characters and set pieces. You also get the sense that this is a full realized universe with a backstory, rules, and magic that weren't just invented on the fly. For me, this is often what makes or breaks a fantasy novel.
Some of the action, while well described, dragged on a bit longer than I'd like; it's a bit daunting to start a series with a 500 pager. So often this books bloat as the series develop. There was a variety of action though, it wasn't just battle after battle without reason.
I'll continue the series. Hopefully with the setting and exposition out of the way, things will pick up.

Very well written, strong characters with strong lore and world building. There is a variety of morals and motivations throughout. The world building is not overtly described or narrated to the reader as background but is given through action. There is a lot of action and character development, especially in Tavi. Looking forward to reading the other books in the future.
I found the book to be enjoyable enough, but it was rife with fantasy conventions and stock characters. The magic system, or the furies themselves, weren't explained in enough detail for me to get a real understanding of how things worked/ the limitations of the furies. Apparently they can bring people back from the dead in certain circumstances, but not others? Perhaps these details will be filled in later books in the series, but I just didn't find much in this book worth exploring in further volumes.
I have read all of The Dresden Files and love Jim Butcher. I have been told numerous times that I need to read this series as well. I am finally getting around to it. Thank you audio books that allow me to partake in amazing stories while working on my house or doing other chores.
I honestly expected this to read like a Dresden book. It did not. I am overjoyed at Butcher's ability to change his voice and deliver multiple characters that are fully fleshed out with their own unique voices too. I will be immediately be moving on to the next in the series.

I love this series so much. Under powered hero saves the day by using his wits. Plus there's an excellent set of secondary charges, including lots of strong females. Interesting magic and fascinating non human species abound. Jim Butcher apparently created this series on a dare (something to do with Roman legions and pokemon) and I'm so grateful!
Graphic: Cannibalism
Got the audiobook as a pressie, I like the narrator, but sadly the book still sucks
