I listened to the audiobook version while I did Uber Eats. I’m sure George Orwell would love to hear that. Chapter 10 was so completely devastating; I didn’t expect my heart to break for those poor little animals who just wanted a shot at a better life. Doesn’t remind me of anything at all…
Unfortunately, it seems like things can never be much better or much worse than they always are. History is a never ending cycle of repetition—for the ones who did learn are long dead, and even though we’ve developed technology to allow us to remember, the message never really gets through until you’re the one being carted off to the slaughter house. And alas the cycle repeats; those in charge claim to be different, but really, all they offer is more of the same: hunger, hardship, and disappointment for the rest of us. Seems to truly be the one unalterable law of life.

A short and easy read about a very complicated topic. The way the allegory was presented was engaging and easy to understand, which I think is great to have for younger readers. It’s easy to see why this book is so prevalent in schools.
It’s unfortunately very topical even 80 years later. We’re watching misinformation and propaganda be shoved at us in real time and it’s important not to be complacent in it. As sadly realistic as it can be, I do wish the farm animals had realized what was happening before it was too late. The ending gave a great message but damn it was depressing.

Smart and brilliant depiction of communism. Somewhere (on the back of the book, I think) I read that this was “a fairy tale for adults”, and that is an apt description. It tells the tale of power becoming corrupt through fairy tale like prose. Again, brilliant.
