I read this in middle school in an advanced reading class, and when we got to the end of the book, the teacher frustratingly exclaimed we'd missed the whole point. The book was about the Russian Revolution, she'd said. The whole thing was an allegory. Well other than Anastasia, most of us at that age didn't know much about the revolution to argue.

After listening to it now as an adult, especially with the included introduction it's clear that it's about more than the Russians. While yes, it applies to the Bolsheviks, it applies to countless political upheavals where groups take advantage and power with promises of bettering life for all, only to use it to enrich themselves. There are a lot of parallels to the current American political system especially.

This book was amazing, and really fun to analyze. I loved all the different layers and lenses you could read it through. There were so many lines I wish I could underline (library book). It's cool to see what different things represent in the allegory for the Soviet Union, and how this applies to politics in general. It's also just a very interesting story in general.

Great read, a little challenging for me just because the raw representation of political oppression is so accurate, that it didn't excite me. It was as if I was reading an interesting history book, rather than symbolic fiction.
I also found it a great choice that the pigs turned out to be the worst of the animals, and the most resembling of humans, given that "pig" is also used to negatively describe policemen, another corps known for corrupted oppression.

Really glad that I finally read a full Orwell, excited to notice the ways it improved my literacy and linguistics!

i finished this in a 5 hour plane ride and could not put it down. the ending was excellently crafted but still managed to be a twist despite everything being laid out so openly

The different voices and personalities of the characters were performed well. I loved the singing. I can definitely see why this is banned or suggested for banning in some places.

It's not perfect, and no allegory ever is, but there's a reason this is a classic. A timeless caution against totalitarianism, even if it can and often is misapplied by those on the right who want to use it as a proof text against socialism.
