One of my favorite European classic books. The allegory between the animals and the leaders/citizens of the Russian Revolution and, then, the Soviet Union is obvious, and yet it can beautifully stand as a children's fairytale with great messaging. Often misunderstood by both right and left wingers, it will always remain as an important creation of a deeply socialist author who shared a small hope for humanity's future.

There is breadth and depth enough to serve literature analysts and schoolchildren alike: I read this first in school at the age of around 12. I feel its cohesivity is largely lost if read over a week or more, as it tends to be read in an educational setting. I did suspect that reading this over two days would make this far more appealing than my 12-year-old self found it, what with being 'forced' to read it. And indeed it was.
Yes, it's an allegory for the Russian Revolution, but you'd take a narrow view to say that it mirrors it entirely. Animal Farm is the watered-down, bare bones reality of the false promises of all political systems. A 100-page prophecy that, whatever the outcome of the unfolding Cold War, the rich and powerful stay at the top. The workers' state an afterthought.
