Look, it's not bad, but I don't think I'll ever read it again. For any book being told from a child's first-person perspective, the annoyance level has to be pretty low for me to like it, and it was just a little too much in some cases. It may make it more realistic, but it just made me tired.

What a unique story-telling experience. Compelling and heart-breaking, we are taken through the heartache and pains of a 5-year-old boy and his mom who are trapped in a trafficking situation.

The story is told through the perspective of the child, so the narrative is told by a 5-year-old. It took me a while to get used to this at the beginning, but once I was, I couldn't put the book down.

The attention to detail was extremely realistic and made the story that much more real. The events that took place were hard to comprehend but completely traumatic. It goes through the beginning, the living in captivity, the escape, the aftercare, and the future of these two people and the reality of being kidnapped and then thrown back into the real world after 7 years.

Truly heartbreaking and eye-opening to realize this book is a reality and things like this happen everyday in plain sight.

The decision to write this book from the perspective of a five year old was a phenomenal one and really elevated the novel. I think if it had taken place in the third person or through Ma's perspective it wouldn't have nearly been as good.

I do wish they talked more about their reintegration into society. That felt very underdeveloped, especially for the character of Ma. The throw away line about how she's trying to still be Ma but also learn to be herself again was something really thought provoking, but it's barely expanded on.

Took a while to get adjusted to the story coming from a 5 year olds perspective but I was thankful it was because I don’t think I could have read this book if it had been from the mom’s. It was not an easy read, emotional and heavy but I had to know how it ended and I knew there was some hope for the ending. There were some details that felt pointless and sometimes I didn’t fully believe the narrator was a 5 year old child, but overall a thought provoking story that will stay with me for a while. It is scary to think this book is loosely based on a true story.

Its incredible and impossible to put down. One of the times where the narrator is impossible to replicate in film, and thats where the book really shines
