Disappointing. It was set in Hull and i loved the local references. But really I did not find the characters and plot at all convincing. Sort of tortuous
quite unimpressive, McAvoy is a doormat and I really couldn't care less about his personal life. The plot was ok but nothing special
I love police procedural mysteries. And the ones set in the UK are my fave!! This book had an intriguing case, but I just couldn't handle all the gratuitous references to the main character and his wife, if you know what I mean. They did nothing to advance the story. Police stories can be gritty, but this was too much. Didn't finish.
I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I'm not usually into straight detective/cop mysteries, but Mark has such a way with worrying that I was genuinely invested and eager to find out what happened next. The high-stakes scenes were pretty intense as well, and the killer made sense. I honestly might even continue this series and see what good old McAvoy does next!

What a fine police procedural. Quickly paced, great story, and loads of characters that I can't wait to see continue to develop. Well done!
A 2013 staff fiction favorite recommended by Jane and Haley.

Dark Winter is a fantastic debut of a police procedural series that takes place in northern England. Just as Detective Sergeant Aector McAvoy seems to be able to put himself in the mind of a killer, David Mark has developed his characters so completely that the reader can almost put himself in the mind of McAvoy as he is connecting dots that no one else even sees. McAvoy may be a gentle giant of a man but he is also determined to get at the truth even if his job is in jeopardy. Luckily, he finds a believer in his boss, another dedicated officer who also is fighting to keep her job.
