The beginning was good, I enjoyed the witches and politics and the magic system, the friendship dynamic between Alex, Verity, and Rune, and the fake romance turned real between Rune and Gideon for the sake of furthering their own agendas. I would have liked to see more close calls between rune and gideon like with the incident in the mine because the whole “searching her for casting scars” plot was getting immensely old. How many times does gideon need to search her, go back to Harrow and report there are none, be convinced by her that he needs to look again, rinse and repeat? It was so boring and tedious. Otherwise this book was just average. Towards the 75% mark I had no desire or motivation to keep reading but had to push through because it seemed like the plot was beating us over the head at every turn. I’m so glad Rune overheard Gideon talking to Harrow and Laila after they slept together and decided to run straight into Alex’s arms. While gideon was certainly made to be more interesting for the majority of the story, I was holding out hope for Alex. He was Runes day one, her comfort, her home and I so wanted to see a romance bloom between them. I did in fact cry when he died in her arms at the end, my wish to see them together dying along with him 💔

This story blew me away, and I'm not sure how I'll manage to wait before reading the next one. SO. GOOD.

The characters were believable and compelling. We had 2 POVs, the witch and the witch hunter, and each POV I was in I found myself agreeing with/understanding them and their respective companions in regards to which side of this... conflict they were on.

There were twists I did not see coming. Some I guessed at. But still ended up in shock and in tears before the end of the book.

This was seriously such a good book... if you've been considering it, don't delay any longer! Read it!

4/5 ⭐️ I enjoyed it a lot. The mamin characters were amazing but side ones were lacking a little. I predicted most of the plot, but I still liked it which isn't always a give. 😊 I look forward to finishing this duet.
