I thought it was going to be better? I kind of think it was overhyped and the plot was predictable and the romance was fine. I didn’t become obsessed with the chemistry between the main characters. Idk if I’m being a hater. I finished the book because I was in too deep. Overall, forgettable and I won't be finishing the series

That twist with Verity being Cressida though? That was a twist I was not expecting!

This book tells the push and pull story of the Crimson Moth Rune, and witch hunter Gideon. Both have a hidden agenda of catching the other in the act, but have the idea of courting each other in order to reveal it. Gideon's brother Alex played an important part in the game between them, who eventually died by the hands of the former witch queen Cressida. In the end, Rune left with Cressida since she was out of options, and Gideon swore to hunt Rune down.
Plot
- The back story of Gideon and Alex is the highlight of this book. Gideon had a complicated and twisted history with witches which lead to his hatred for the entire community. Alex was a kind-hearted boy who always wanted to find the good in everyone, and his warm love for Rune was endearing. The dynamic between the brothers was on point, without too much extreme emotions but with love and trust.
- The romance between Gideon and Rune is very forced. It's more like lust out of the good appearances of each other. They never had anything real that draw them to one another, everything was fake and insignificant. Since this is a romantasy, the romance is a major downside of the book.
Pacing
- The pacing of the book was nice. Not too fast where it's hard to keep up, but had enough descriptions of the character relationships and plot advancement.
Overall, this is a fun popcorn read, and I'll be finishing the duology.

I liked it but couldn’t get over the period blood… was nothing else an option? Every time I think about this book, that’s the first thing that pops into my mind not the characters not the plot, not the emotions, just period blood.
