Real review:

ESH.

Halfway review: I'm not done yet, but I feel like I have a moral obligation to put this here because I haven't seen it mentioned in the other reviews. I was stoked to see that there was a kindle version on Amazon, and snagged it up. IT WAS A MISTAKE. This is the laziest, most poorly formatted ebook I have ever spent $10+ on. It's like somebody scanned a paper copy and didn't glance at it once before calling it a day, so it is full of bizarre, sometimes confusing typos; weird line breaks; and occasional page numbers interspersed throughout the text. It is extremely difficult to get through. If you want to read this book, please be smarter than me and just buy a hard copy.

Aging misogynist Shunsuke desires revenge for all the failings he attributes to women and enlists the assistance of Yuichi to accomplish his goal. Yuichi is a perfect male specimen and is also gay (bisexual?) so he is supposed to woo the women as Shansuke directs, make them love him, and ultimately leave them humiliated. Everyone sucks here.

Shunsuke misogynistic hatred was pretty vile and Mishima spent a lot of time on philosophical meanderings so there were stretches where tedium took over. Overall though, the writing style and imagery was captivating enough to allow me to overcome. I can't say I liked the book but I'm not sorry I read it. Another reviewer suggested that perhaps this wasn't the novel of Mishima's to start with so I will be on the lookout for his other works to see if one of them better suits.
