Going into this book, I knew it was going to be emotional.  I mean, Say You Swear made me cry like a baby, so I was prepared šŸ˜‚

This one though?  Ugh, a punch to the gut.  Mason and Peyton had me just wanting to hug them and tell them everything will be okay.  Peyton has never felt like she’s had people in her corner, until she turns up on her brother’s doorstep, pregnant.  The only person she could count on was her boyfriend, Deaton.  When he shows up at her brothers to find her, he’s supportive and kind.  Unfortunately, on his way home, he’s in a car accident and doesn’t make it.  This totally destroys Peyton.  But Mason is there for her, through all of it.  And with that, a beautiful love story begins.  Mason is a caring, patient, and considerate man.  But also battles with the feeling of not being good enough, feeling as if he isn’t needed then he’ll be pushed to the side.

Guilt and grief are a huge part of this book.  I could relate a lot to Peyton.  I know what it’s like to lose someone you love unexpectedly, I know that feeling of guilt that drowns you when you start to move on, that fear that anyone you love will be taken from you.  I know how hard it can be to navigate the emotions that come with all of that, it’s overwhelming and can feel never ending.  But moving on can be beautiful, it doesn’t mean you don’t love that person or don’t miss them.

This is a slow burn with past and present POVs, and that slow burn is so worth it.  When everything comes together, it’s emotional, beautiful, and just feels so right.  Also worth mentioning, while Mason is a fucking saint, he has a very, very dirty mouth 🄵.

I won’t lie I had high expectations for this one after Say You Swear and it just didn’t live up to my expectations. Mason and Payton’s book never truly came alive for me. It felt bare and basic of what it could be. The past and present timeline was okay it just didn’t fully help understand the ā€œwhyā€ in their relationship. It just didn’t come together how I would have liked and they never really communicated which was a little annoying when she literally was running from him when trying to have a conversation. I understand where her drawback comes from but I guess she was 18 and lacked some maturity maybe, but it just bothered me. I don’t know it’s hard because I liked the characters and loved the first book in the series but this one was just not it.

We already saw Mason and Peyton grow closer in the previous book, so I was really excited for this one. But wow, I was also super frustrated! My emotions were all over the place—from happy and excited, to angry and heartbroken.

Mason was so protective of Peyton from the start. After her boyfriend dies, he’s always there for her, even at her son’s birth. You could really feel how much he cared for her and was there through everything.

But Peyton was struggling emotionally, and when she suddenly pushes Mason away, I was losing it! You could see how much it was tearing him apart. He became a shadow of himself, and that just added to my frustration!

Chase was a good friend to Peyton, but I wish he had spoken up and helped Mason too. And honestly, I didn’t like Mason calling Peyton ā€œpretty littleā€ā€”it felt out of place.

I wanted to see more of Mason and Peyton when they finally come together. Their relationship kept building throughout the book, but we didn’t get enough of them as a couple. The ending felt too rushed for something that had been blossoming the whole time.

This book made me chuck my phone onto the floor at the gym because it had me angry. I originally aimed for the wall but I wasn't looking to get banned from my gym.

Did this book live up to the the hype of Say You Swear, no unfortunately it did not. Mason and Payton's love story just felt dragged out, especially towards their HEA. I wanted to see more of them together in present day but unfortunately it was only in the last bit of the book.

Mason, the sweetheart that he is. That man is beyond patient and I love him. He deserves better. Payton, while I understand she'd been grieving and there's not timeline on grief irritated me by the simple fact that she wouldn't talk to Mason. If she'd just talked to him about her fears, we could've gotten more of their love story in present tense, but here we are.
