3.5 and the .5 is entirely bc the ending was good.
A rather different novel from the queen of mystery. There is a sense of mystery and romance from the start, but it is not like her usual detective novels. I had a hunch towards the end which turned out to be right. It did not have the usual 'Aha' feeling that you get when you solve a mystery. This one almost felt like you were being willfully fooled. All the characters are equally shrouded in mystery, so the plot keeps you on your toes. But it felt like the death came too late in the book. The end denouement is perhaps the best part leaving you with a good, if bitter aftertaste.
A thoroughly entertaining read nevertheless. Agatha Christie never misses.

This work was a departure from her classic mysteries where she normally incorporates plenty of characters and of course one or more of her well known investigators. In this work it is a sole narrative and as he relates his memoir to the reader the story which begins on a rather light note becomes progressively dark. Excellent work.

I thought this was a great story! I know there are a lot of mixed views on this one, but I do feel like she did a great job in writing this book. It was different from some of her other stories, but I think that's what made it so interesting. I kept expecting her typical style, but then she would give me something different. I enjoyed that. It made me feel like I was reading a different author, but still with some Agatha Christie traits in there.
Something I really enjoyed about reading this story is having that feeling like you know something is coming, but you don't know when. I felt as though she was dangling me on a string, hinting that something is going to happen, but you have to keep waiting. Though, when the murder finally came, it wasn't what I expected. I expected more out of it, but still was satisfied.
I had slight assumptions of the murderer, but I kept bringing myself to believe it was other characters. The way she brought it to the surface was well played out. It had me flipping through the pages to understand the mind of this character who I thought was so different. I enjoyed that added psychological aspect.
Overall, I think this was a great read and would definitely recommend it.
