A good, quick read with a surprise ending that with careful re-reading, isn't actually that big of a surprise.
The first 80% of the book is very slow and repetitive. I kept waiting for the story. The ending makes reading this worthwhile, with characters suddenly getting developed and the plot moving forward.

I was tempted by this quick read after hearing the book recommended by an author at the Bloody Scotland online festival this past weekend. The ebook was available at my library, so...
Not long into the book, bells started ringing. I knew this story, but I couldn't recall reading it before. Then I remembered. I had caught a television movie version recently one lazy Sunday. Oh, no, I thought. But I kept on because there were tiny differences so it might not be the same. Well, this was indeed the original of the television movie, but it was better. The movie was fine for a Sunday afternoon, but the model for this tale worked better. And I did get a slight surprise about something at the end, and that is always a bonus.
After my last Christie, I said I was fed up with the class differences and the racism. The class differences were here, but they were integral to the story. The racial slurs come out in full force for one character. I think the last book surprised me, but this time I was prepared. That doesn't make it better. I just ignored it to get to the gist of the mystery. Like eating cheap chocolates when you know the good chocolates are better for you...
PS I would say that this is one of her better mysteries and probably one of the darker ones, too.

This was very gossipy and not at all mystery until the last almost 15% of the book. The last 15% was great. Definitely no where near my favorite Christie piece.
