Che libro. Se esiste davvero una maledizione, come quella che aleggia sul Campo degli Zingari in cui è ambientata questa storia di Agatha Christie, beh, allora è quella di farti ammaliare da questo libro fin dalle prime parole.
Michael Rogers, squattrinato e affascinante, incontra per caso Fenella (Ellie) Guteman a pochi passi da un vasto terreno dal nome evocativo, “Campo degli Zingari”, in cui si vocifera gravi una orribile maledizione. Eppure Rogers, innamoratosi perdutamente della ragazza, vuole a tutti i costi comprare il terreno in cui si sono conosciuti per edificarne una casa, una volta sposati. Caso vuole che Ellie sia una ricca ereditiera e questo permette davvero ai giovani di poter realizzare i loro sogni.
Tra messaggi minatori, profezie sussurrate e personaggi bizzarri che si avvicinano alla villa, i due coniugi cercano di vivere il loro idillio, che però, come accade in ogni buon libro di zia Agatha, è destinato a scontrarsi con la realtà, quella di un delitto.
Diversissimo dai classici romanzi a cui si è abituati, “Nella mia fine è il mio principio”, si prende tutto il suo tempo (più di metà) prima di farci arrivare a ciò che però aleggia fin dall’inizio. Entriamo nella storia d’amore tra Mike ed Ellie in punta di piedi, novelli Romeo e Giulietta osteggiati, almeno in parte, dalle rispettive famiglie. Abbiamo, così, modo di conoscerli, anche di affezionarci a loro, prima dell’evento terribile che, sappiamo, sta solo aspettando il momento propizio per avventarsi su di noi (e su di loro).
Tra i più apprezzati da Agatha stessa, questo romanzo è un turbinio di sensazioni, e la soluzione del caso è sicuramente non nuova (ci sono altri romanzi della stessa autrice che giocano in questo modo con i lettori, ma non dirò quali per non fare spoiler), ma è effettivamente l’unica possibile.
Per il mese di luglio della #readchristie2023 si doveva leggere un libro a tema “Love and Lust” e credo di poter dire di aver letto probabilmente il migliore e più azzeccato.

Anche oggi indovino il colpevole nei libri di Agatha Christie domani.
I know this is one of Agatha Christie's favorites, and the twist in the end (of course) really took me by surprise and freaked me out, but the first half or so was just a little bit flat for me. The characters really didn't come to life, and I felt rather in the dark about their backstories and thus not as invested as I could've been. Very good diversion of suspicion was put to use here, though, and the drama demonstrates why Christie is really the best.
A book that is Agatha's favorite and the one that deserves to be flung into an ocean from a cliff.
Endless Night is a breathing piece of fiction. I came across it plenty of times while reading all of Christie this year but I never settled upon it.
Until my mother picked it as our next read. There is a serendipitous element in this as my mother made me translate and narrate Agatha which threw me into this rabbit hole of mystery and crimes. She is also born in the year that this book was published and it is the one that we shall never forget.
Endless Night at its core is a love story but the sense of doom and destruction is significantly present from the opening scene. Agatha was once asked if she had a hard time writing the narrator for this novel and she confidently answered that it was very easy as she, with years of experience, knows what men in their 20s are like.
This familiar narrator takes the readers on a journey where one is often more confused about who shall be the victim than who shall be the criminal as somewhere everyone knows where the story is leading to.
However, mind you, this novel is humbling. It is the last art piece of a creative master where everything that a reader knows about Agatha's novels, criminals' psychology, and crime is presented.
It is a story that captures a psychopath that checks all the boxes. The ending is also one of the most satisfying and comes as a slap across the head that steals away the land you stand upon and the air in the room- regardless if you are correct or not.
After completing the novel at 8 PM, I desperately needed the curtains to fall and the actors to present themselves smiling and bowing. I needed to walk home from the cinema walking the bustling streets to return from this factional tale- but was it truly just a piece of fiction?
There is an answer to that and I hope you would find it. Apart from that, there's still plenty to say about this novel but the lesser said is better. I would recommend you choose this book after reading some of Agatha's work and dive in naked to experience this phenomenal fiction.
