This is one of my first Agatha Christie mysteries. I read it when I was 14 and was very impressed. I loved the eerie atmosphere, the sense of a lurking dark force upon the cursed couple, their love for each other and the reveal.

This feels so different from other Christie mysteries in the sense that instead of the murder occuring in the beginning, the story focuses on Mike and Ellie's relationship, makes us root for them, love them
only to kill one of them later..

I was very surprised when I checked out goodreads reviews for this book. I was expecting a lot of praise and sympathy for the characters but instead had to deal with people calling one of my favourite books the worst Christie. Now that I have read a lot more of her whodunnits, I can totally see why people were complaining.

The murder occured in a very Death on the Nile kind of way and the murderer was revealed in a very The Murder of Roger Ackroyd kind of way. But at the time I had read neither. I can now see why I was only mildly impressed by both of these books since I had seen the exact formula being used in this one.

Despite all this I'll still give it 5 stars. I know the plot is recycled and unoriginal. But it was the first one of its kind to blow me away.
