Christie goes Gothic.
The final great murder mystery Christie wrote (since Curtain was written in the 1940's) I enjoyed Hallowe'en Party, but it wasn't one of her brilliant stories - more of a 3* read.
Mike Rogers wants money but he is too lazy & too impatient to work for it. So he is fortunate that wealthy, innocent Ellie comes into his life. She loves the piece of land Mike loves & the architect he admires builds a stunning mansion on it. They could have been so happy...
...All I knew about was sex. That was all anybody of my generation seemed to know about.
& Christie (& the times) appears prejudiced against gypsies - whether genuinely or the beliefs of the times were a convenient plot device. I'd love to know if later editions are censored.
Well plotted &, on first read, a wonderful twist. Still enjoyable reading a work of a writer on top of her game.
I saw the Hayley Mills movie version at the time of it's release & remember being disappointed, but that is more because of my own picture in my head. I know the opening credits are on You Tube - I'm going to see if there is anything else. I do have to say on my edition they have used a stunningly unattractive picture of both Mills & Hywel Bennett. Spoiler
You will never get the impact of the first reading again, but this was a stunning piece of work. There are very few lines that shows the aging Christie was no longer comfortable writing about the modern world, such as;...All I knew about was sex. That was all anybody of my generation seemed to know about.
& Christie (& the times) appears prejudiced against gypsies - whether genuinely or the beliefs of the times were a convenient plot device. I'd love to know if later editions are censored.
