Endless Night

Agatha Christie

Not one of my favorites.

With striking gothic overtones and Mrs. Lee's warnings of doom, you know this is about to be more than a love story. Although, quite frankly, we all probably got that from the author's name alone.

I decided to read Endless Night because it is apparently one of Agatha Christie's favorites. I also learned that while she normally took a few months to write her mysteries, she wrote this in just six weeks.

It makes sense because this feels more insular than the other ones I've read so far. The core cast of characters is quite tight and others simply pass in and out of the story. In some ways, the land feels like a main character because its legend drives the plot forward in key ways.

This is also a single narrator, which was done well as it was with my current favorite The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.

Overall, another wonderful Christie read that feels quite different in tone and execution. I will certainly return to this and also think it's a great entry since it doesn't feed into either the Poirot or Marple series. While the final twist was not a surprise, it was so well-written and propelled forward that I enjoyed having the reveal unfold rather than come as a sudden shock.
