Gefiel mir eindeutig besser als vor 3 oder 4 Jahren. Dass es anstrengend zu lesen ist, bleibt trotzdem Fakt. ;)

You need to know before I start that I had to read this book for school.

Ok so first of all this wasn’t my favorite book at all. It started super super slow and there is nothing happening. It took me sooo long to get through this short book.
But I liked the last bit of the book. I think the trial was the most interesting part of the book. The rest felt like a boring history lesson and not a book you are suppose to enjoy.

I would recommend the book for everyone that is interested in the history of that time period but no others.

Engrossing read. The last two lines sum it up: It doesn't end. Never will it end.

Despite my well-known interest in German history, and how Germans deal with their past, this book managed to surprise me in how much I enjoyed it. Grass' writing style reminded me of a contemporary, who delights me, Sven Lindqvist. I found Grass' narrative gripping and just cynical enough. Again, an excellent find on my hosts' bookshelves.

This book is just all so random. The characters don't make sense, and neither does the plot. It just feels all over the place.

I'm sure if I tried reading this book again now (either in the original German, or in English) I'd actually be able to understand it, and then be able to find something in it that makes it worthwhile.

As things are right now, though, all I can really remember is trying to struggle through pages of German words that made absolutely no sense when put together. I'm sure my teacher meant well, but I wasn't the only one in my class having trouble.

Still, this book is hailed as classic German literature, and for that I think I might just give it another try later on in life. As soon as I can get past the language, and the total senselessness of it.
