This book went super fast, and I think that’s because the events flew by without a ton of in-depth moments. I wish I liked the characters more, but they just didn’t feel super developed. I honestly was constantly waiting to get back to Alistair and Isabel’s perspectives, mostly Alistair because he felt the most developed. That being said, I did get hooked on this story. I understand why it’s been compared to a magical hunger games, but it’s a hunger games without a meaning commentary on our real world. I’m kind of shocked this isn’t all one book, as I feel like there’s not much left to wrap up in the finale. But, maybe it will surprise me, I was certainly surprised many times throughout this book.

A little younger in targeted age group I think. Writing was well done but simple language. I think a lot of details were told instead of shown and many themes and plot points were obvious. Overall great plot idea and will probably read book two but not sure I’ll recommend to my direct peer group.

Characters: 4/5- Three out of the main seven characters have chapters in the book, so I feel there are other voew points missing. However this does not in anyway take away from the characters that we get to know deeper. They are very well crafted and interesting.

Atmosphere: 5/5- You get the sense that from the first few chapters that their is a heaviness that surrounds the place and the people. It is always there throughout the whole book, even when your thoughts aren't focusing on it.

Writing: 4/5- Fast-paced, day-to-day venacular, most readers will be able to pick up the book and not have trouble with word pronunciation or definition.

Plot: 5/5- Seven children, one from each "great" family, are chosen to enter a tournament to the death to become the victor who will weild (along with their family) the rights to control High Magic.

Enjoyment: 5/5- Overall, the book was very enjoyable. Easy to read. Quick paced. Can't wait to get my hands on the second book.

I really loved this book. It’s very similar to Hunger Games with a more “witchy” aesthetic which I appreciate. The book jumps between 4 main characters who are very different and yet very similar. They each come from different backgrounds that play a huge part in the reasoning for their actions throughout the tournament. And because of the way the POV changes, the reader is able to sympathize with them despite the fact they’re all trying to kill one another.
