This book is complicated, for me. It has aspects I really enjoy, specially one of the protagonists and her storyline. However, the quality is incredibly uneven, swinging from legitimately complex and interesting narrative to the most trope-filled generalized characterization and plot beats I’ve encountered (A character literally points out that there’s “only one bed” in a particularly groan-worthy romantic subplot). Characters that are interesting get strong-armed into changing their behavior and motivations whenever the plot demands, showing the hand of the author plainly. This book is fine for teen readers and fans of #booktok, but it left me wanting.

bought this excited to read it, then was very disappointed with the start because the writing was a little lacklustre and very Fanfiction-esque. But then it turned itself around as the plot kicked in which kept me reading tbh, potentially due to the very apparent similarities to the Hunger Games. I didn’t really think the characters lived up to the title of “villains” and there wasn’t much grey area of morality explored. Also something happened towards the end which felt a little bit cheap. But if you’re looking for a fairly easy and familiar read it’s fantastic.
