I was in the mood for an addicting read, so I picked this one up because I knew there was a tournament in it. I did not know that it was a dark, witchy, magical version of hunger games, and though some of the world building at the beginning made the reading more dense and I had to slow down to digest it, this story had me hooked. Even the beginning despite my snail's pace reading at first. All the characters are antiheros/morally grey, and seeing some of them (ok one in particular) trying to constantly convince themselves they're monster enough to win this murderous game but then softening towards one another- I ate that shit up. My biggest complaint is just how frustrated I got near the end with how stubbornly stupid some of the characters were being, lol. But overall I really enjoyed this one- it was so unique and gripping and horrible in the best ways. I'll be needing the sequel this summer

so they killed 1 brother to make other stronger but which still can't guarantee that he won't die too, while the tournament requires only 1 death from the family, but the Lowes basically kill 2 instead?
Nah that family was dumb, the ending was satisfying, you go our little murderers

4.5⭐️ This was a super fun read!! Full of twists and turns, betrayals, enemies to lovers!! Think hunger games but with magic! All of the characters are incredible and well-developed. Some of the plot twists had me gasping you guys. I can’t wait for the sequel, I thoroughly enjoyed this!!

I thought this book would not be that dark since it’s YA but it definitely gets twisted. The last quarter of the book is great, but the rest was at times a slog to get through. Lots of near misses and deadends. Large swatches of the book have no action. But I was interested enough to see it through and I’m glad I did. I can see this as the next Harry Potter. My expectations were a bit too high for the horror and darkness, but I was pleasantly surprised that I still enjoyed the stories and liked the characters.
